Sunny Isles Real Estate
Ideally situated on a barrier island in the northeast tip of Miami-Dade County, the city of Sunny Isles Beach fills the three most important criteria when it comes to real estate: location, location, location.
With the Atlantic Ocean on its east and the Intracoastal Waterway on its west, the city, previously known only as Sunny Isles, was incorporated on July 16, 1997. Just over 22 years after its incorporation, the city boasts an enviable lifestyle that can be enjoyed by visitors and residents alike.
The beach alone, with its soft, white sand, is two miles long. The clear waters of the ocean invite people to snorkel, dive, and enjoy all types of water sports and activities.
A Little Bit Of History
As far back as 1920, a private investor by the name of Harvey Baker Graves acquired a tract of land measuring over 2.26 square miles. He gave this site of future development the name of Sunny Isles, “The Venice of America”. Once the construction of the Haulover bridge was finished around 1925, this tract of land became accessible directly from North Miami Beach. The new road served to attract a slew of developers who had been busy at work, widening streams, digging and creating canals, and developing islands and peninsulas in order to build an attractive waterfront.
Once the Sunny Isles pier was constructed, it became an instant tourist destination. This occurred after 1936, when Kurt Froedtert, a Milwaukee malt magnate, purchased Sunny Isles. In 1982, the half-mile-long Sunny Isles Pier was designated a historic site. In the early-mid ’80s, it went through restoration and re-opened to the public in 1986.
Around the 1950s, development took off in the area of Golden Shores when houses started going up. In that same decade and in the following one, a series of small hotels and motels started popping up along Collins Avenue. This tract of land became so appealing that tourists came from all over to vacation in themed motels of exotic design along “Motel Row.”
When the city budget was adopted in September of 2002, the city commission gave its approval to the city’s first formal Capital Improvement Program. The eight-year plan included park development and landscaping, stormwater improvements, buildings, and streetscape plans. This program would utilize about $40 million of public improvements, mostly for parks, beautification, and infrastructure, and represented the most ambitious project undertaken by the city to date.
On February 25, 2005, the city held a grand opening ceremony for its brand-new city hall, which bears the name “Sunny Isles Beach Government Center.”
Throughout its short history, Sunny Isles Beach has made a concentrated effort to create and build countless parks, beautify its main thoroughfares with decorated sidewalks and beautiful landscaping, and conduct beach renourishment projects as needed.
With this background plus what nature itself has to offer, it’s no wonder that the city has undergone an amazing transformation in the last decades, switching the line of hotels and motels that covered the east side of Collins Avenue for luxurious high-rises that vie for the best in architecture, amenities and all sorts of comforts to their residents.
The city, which has gone from being the “Venice of America” to now billing itself as Florida’s Riviera, and has become very demographically diverse, with families finding homes in both skyscrapers and single-family home communities. Sunny Isles Beach has been able to achieve a unique atmosphere, combining both a resort and a residential feel.
Sunny Isles Beach has also become filled with amenities, from parks to playgrounds and cultural activities, with extensive shopping in fabulous Aventura Mall and the prestigious Shoppes at Bal Harbour just a short ride away. First-class hotels dot the coastline of Sunny Isles Beach, and it is also home to a wide variety of gourmet restaurants and coffee shops offering all sorts of cuisine, above-average schools, and plenty of access points for beachgoers of all ages.
No doubt about it, with a little more than two decades since its incorporation, the city has come a long way from its modest beginnings. Along with the boom in condominium development, sophisticated resorts and expansive homes have been built. These luxurious accommodations have attracted visitors and investors from the four corners of the world.
The well-thought-out growth and development have created the renaissance that transformed a small, insignificant beachfront town to a city known and craved worldwide. And the planning continues with the increase in infrastructure such as the ambitious undergrounding project for all utilities that is still ongoing at this point, to a well-organized and responsive police department and a low tax rate.
Sunny Isles Luxury Real Estate, The Ideal Place For You
Sunny Isles Beach’s warm and inviting climate and its casual, laid-back vibe, are ideal for families and residents who want the highest quality of life. If you select this city as your home, you should know you will be within walking distance to plenty of parks, many of which also provide you with direct access to the pristine beach, and a variety of recreational opportunities. Haulover Park, for example, offers a full-service marina and tennis courts, while Oleta River Park will allow you to enjoy natural preserves in Florida’s largest urban park.
Sunny Isles Beach has quickly become a developing resort area, attracting over one million visitors per year. But that doesn’t mean it’s not also ideal for those residents that chose to call it their permanent home. And don’t forget that the city is conveniently located to two international airports, Miami and Fort Lauderdale, as well as Port Everglades and the Port of Miami for when the mood strikes and you wish to spend a few weeks on a luxury cruise and truly pamper yourself.
